Chapter 7 Safety and Handling 28
Hearing loss Listening to sound at high volumes may damage your hearing. To prevent possible
hearing damage, do not listen at high volume levels for long periods. Background noise, as
well as continued exposure to high volume levels, can make sounds seem quieter than they
actually are. The Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic sold with iPhone 4S and later in China
(identiable by dark insulating rings on the plug) are designed to comply with Chinese standards
and are not compatible with iPod shue. Use only compatible earbuds or headphones with your
device. Turn on the audio and check the volume before inserting anything in your ear. For more
information about hearing loss, see www.apple.com/sound. For information about how to set a
maximum volume limit on iPod shue, see Setting a volume limit on page 20.
Radio frequency interference Observe signs and notices that prohibit or restrict the use of
electronic devices (for example, in health care facilities or blasting areas). Although iPod shue
is designed, tested, and manufactured to comply with regulations governing radio frequency
emissions, such emissions from iPod shue can negatively aect the operation of other
electronic equipment, causing them to malfunction. Turn o iPod shue when use is prohibited,
such as while traveling in aircraft, or when asked to do so by authorities.
Medical conditions If you have medical conditions that you believe could be aected by
iPod shue (for example, seizures, blackouts, eyestrain, or headaches), consult with your
physician prior to using iPod shue.
Important handling information
Using connectors, ports, and buttons Never force a connector into a port or apply excessive
pressure to a button because this may cause damage that is not covered under the warranty. If
the connector and port don’t join with reasonable ease, they probably don’t match. Check for
obstructions, then make sure that the connector matches the port and that the connector is
positioned correctly in relation to the port.
Operating iPod shue in acceptable temperatures iPod shue is designed to work in
temperatures between 0º and 35º C (32º and 95º F) and stored in temperatures between -20º
and 45º C (-4º and 113º F). iPod shue can be damaged and battery life shortened if stored or
operated outside of this temperature range (for example, if left in a hot car). iPod shue will
shut down if it gets too hot. Avoid exposing iPod shue to dramatic changes in temperature or
humidity. When you’re using iPod shue or charging the battery, it is normal for iPod shue to
get warm.
Keeping the outside of iPod shue clean To clean iPod shue, unplug all cables, turn it o
(slide the three-way switch to OFF), and use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting
moisture in openings. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents,
alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean iPod shue.
Disposing of iPod shue properly For information about the proper disposal of iPod shue,
including other important regulatory compliance information, see Disposal and Recycling
Information on page 31.
